This Year I Planted 8 Varieties! What Was I Thinking?
Welcome back. March is going quickly. Here we are already about two thirds of the way thought the month. It will be April soon which will bring even more drastic weather changes. In a good way. Most years I start mowing lawn and rototill the garden in April. And most likely I should be able to plant peas before the end of April.
However, in the meantime, the next week is supposed to feature below normal temperatures, especially this coming Sunday and Monday, as temperatures won’t even reach above freezing. Yikes! Hopefully the last cold snap but maybe not.
For me, tomatoes is the main event. My pride and joy. If you love tomatoes you know what I mean. If you haven’t tried growing heirloom tomatoes, I highly recommend it. The flavor can’t be surpassed. Heirloom varieties also offer tomatoes with very unique appearances.
This year I am going out on a limb as I am trying all new varieties except for one. There are so many different heirlooms available these days ,and I love to experiment. Past experience tells me you really can’t go wrong. I must say though that 2 of the varieties are hybrid as I will explain below.
I started the seeds this year as I usually do using peat pellets. These work well for me and the containers (Jiffy) have a plastic dome which create ideal conditions for germination. I drill a few vent holes in the…
